NORDOFF-ROBBINS

NORDOFF-ROBBINS MUSIC THERAPY USES LIVE MUSICAL IMPROVISATION TO HELP IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS ISOLATED BY CONDITIONS SUCH AS LEARNING DISABILITIES, AUTISM, MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS, NEUROLOGICAL DAMAGE OR SERIOUS AND TERMINAL ILLNESS.

The Nordoff-Robbins approach to music therapy developed from the pioneering work of Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins in the 1950/60s. Paul was a composer and pianist who devoted part of his life to working with people with disabilities and Clive was a special needs teacher.

It is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to music, no matter how ill or disabled. The unique qualities of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change, and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively.

In therapy, clients are invited to improvise music on simple instruments with a trained music therapist. The therapist helps them to use these improvisations to bring about positive changes in their area of need, be they physical, emotional, neurological or developmental.

Patrons for the charity include Paul Weller, Davis Bowie, Pink Floyd, Dido, Tom Jones, Sting, George Michael and Sir Cliff Richard OBE.

Nordoff-Robbins need to raise £3m every year to continue to operate.

THE STRAITS TIMES SCHOOL POCKET MONEY FUND

THE STRAITS TIMES SCHOOL POCKET MONEY FUND IS AN ANNUAL COMMUNITY PROJECT INITIATED BY THE STRAITS TIMES THAT MAKES POCKET MONEY AVAILABLE TO CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. THE AIM IS TO EASE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN FACED BY PARENTS PROVIDING FOR THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION.

As the official fund raiser, The Straits Times rallies support for the cause and appeals to the public for donations to the fund. It collaborates with different partners, from corporate organizations to interested individuals for the various fund-raising events.

The Straits Times works closely with the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), the fund's administrator. NCSS disburses the fund to the beneficiaries through its network of family services centres, special school and children's homes. Currently 38 Family Service Centres, 21 Special Schools and 10 Children's Homes have been commissioned to administer the funds.
